Pierre Chan speaks to RTHK's Phoebe Ng

A survey suggests almost half of doctors working in Hong Kong's public hospitals want to leave their jobs – with heavy workloads the main reason given.

The survey was commissioned by medical sector lawmaker Dr Pierre Chan and conducted by the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at Chinese University.

A total of 1,374 doctors were questioned. Around 830 of them were working at public hospitals, while the rest worked in the private sector.

Chan said that the Hospital Authority needs to improve working conditions if it wants to keep hold of its staff.

He told RTHK's Phoebe Ng that doctors should not be overburdened with administrative work.

"Reduce the number of meetings. Reduce the number of papers and forms. That will release a significant number of hands into the clinical work," he said.
