The City University has hinted that it would not make it a rule for students to receive the coronavirus vaccines for them to attend classes, in contrast with the approach of some other local territory institutions.

In an internal letter issued on Sunday, City U’s vice presidents Raymond Chan and Sunny Lee, who lead an emergency response unit at the university, encouraged students and staff to get vaccinated, but added it’s a personal choice.

"The university is a place that intellectuals meet. We do not think it is suitable to adopt paternalism here," they said.

They added that the university believed its members will make suitable judgments and maintain good hygiene and social distancing in the meantime.

Earlier, the University of Science and Technology said students needed to get the jab before September “for normal teaching to resume” in the new school year.

It said those who could not get vaccinated for medical reasons would need to submit test results regularly.

Meanwhile, the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University and Lingnan University had also requested students staying in dormitories to get the jab, or be tested regularly.
