A 17-year-old student has been sentenced to five years and eight months in jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking.

The High Court heard Cheung Chi-ho was arrested in November in possession of 300 grammes of ketamine during an anti-drug operation.

Judge Joseph Yau said he faced a dilemma when sentencing the young offender.

He said he doesn't hope the sentencing will ruin the youth's future and cause him to hate the judiciary system, but added that there is a need to send a strong message to prevent young people from becoming a part of the drug trade.
