Civic Party leader Alvin Yeung has called on young people not to forget the bloody military crackdown in Beijing's Tiananmen Square 29 years ago, saying this would represent a victory for those in power.
Thousands are expected to take part in the annual June 4th candlelight vigil in Victoria Park on Monday to commemorate students killed in the pro-democracy protests.
Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, the lawmaker says the events in 1989 are "not just a meaningless relic of a tragic past".
"Even though I repeat the same words every year, my repetition does not render my words meaningless. It does not render them empty slogans. The annual June 4 candlelight vigil is not for show. It is proof that we still remember, still care and are still relentless in our fight," Yeung said.
He said Beijing was trying to "smother" the people’s spirit as they pushed for reform.
