The Court of Final Appeal has granted permission for a former associate professor, who was found guilty of murdering his wife and daughter and sentenced to life imprisonment, to appeal against his conviction.

Khaw Kim-sun, a former associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University, was charged with murdering the pair by placing a yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide at the back of his wife’s car in 2015.

Khaw was found guilty of two counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court in 2018.

A panel of three judges at the Court of Final Appeal ruled that the trial judge had failed to correctly direct the jury over how they should consider the evidence presented by the prosecution. Full reasons for the ruling will be handed down at a later date.

The appeal hearing will be held on October 10.
