Former lawmakers Wu Chi-wai, Chu Hoi-dick and Leung Kwok-hung were among eight pro-democracy activists arrested on Tuesday morning on suspicion of involvement in unauthorised protests on July 1.

Large crowds took to the streets of Hong Kong Island that day despite the police's refusal to grant permission for a demonstration.

The Democratic Party wrote on social media that Wu was arrested at home at 6.35am on Tuesday. Officers told him he was suspected of joining and inciting others to join an unlawful assembly. The party said he was asked to provide the clothes he wore that day.

Chu wrote on his social media page that his home was searched and he was arrested on suspicion of taking part in and organising an unauthorised assembly.

The League of Social Democrats says four of its members, including former lawmaker Leung, and Figo Chan were arrested on unauthorised assembly charges.

Chan posted video of his arrest on his Facebook page.

Eastern District councillors Andy Chui and Lancelot Chan said on social media that they had been arrested, but did not say on what charge.

The police said eight men aged between 24 and 64 were arrested.

The protest took place on the first day of the implementation of the SAR's new national security legislation. More than 370 people were arrested.
