Football coach Chan Yuen-ting, former journalist Julia Poon and Democratic Party barrister Senia Ng are among the members appointed to a new panel which will advise the government on youth matters.

The Youth Development Commission will incorporate the existing Youth Commission, and the latter's chairman, Lau Ming-wai, is vice chairman of the new body.

Kenneth Fok, the vice president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, and former deputy ministers Gabriel Leung and Jeremy Young are also on the list of members, which was announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the government said the average age of the non-official members is 35.

The government said the body will oversee policies on matters such as young people's education, home ownership, careers and political participation.

The Chief Secretary, Matthew Cheung, chairs the new commission. He said he's pleased that three members of the body came through a self-recommendation scheme which attracted more than 500 applicants.

The three are University of Science and Technology student Cheng Hong-wun, public doctor Chan Po-ling, and Ng Sum-chun from the Hong Kong DanceSport Association.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam pledged during her election campaign to give young people a greater say in policymaking.
