Top officials, prominent businessmen and scholars paid their final respects to internationally-respected sinologist Jao Tsung-i at his funeral on Wednesday.

President Xi Jinping sent a wreath to the memorial service in Quarry Bay.

The late scholar's casket was carried by eight pallbearers, including Chief Executive Carrie Lam, one of her predecessors, Tung Chee-hwa, and the vice-chancellors of the Chinese University and the University of Hong Kong.

Jao, who was noted for his enormous achievements in Chinese and Oriental Studies, died at the age of 100 at his Happy Valley home earlier this month.

The versatile scholar was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2000, and is survived by two daughters.
