The government has been ordered to pay nearly HK$21 million in compensation to a dentist, who quit the public health sector 20 years ago after the Department of Health ignored her work-related injury.

The High Court heard that Yeung Lai-ping, who is around 50 years old, was often made to overwork at the North District Hospital. She ended up getting carpal tunnel syndrome in her right hand, and was persuaded to end her contract.

The court said the department had ignored Dr Yeung's injury and had asked her to perform 43 tooth-extractions within a month.

It also said the department had violated its duty as an employer and ignored the health of its staff.
