District councillors from the Neo Democrats have called for a government apology over a fatal car crash in Fanling, which some have alleged was caused by police tactics.
On Sunday, cars on the Fanling Highway were told to slow down before a speeding car which was being chased by the police rammed into them. Two people in the speeding vehicle died, while seven others including a motorcycle officer were injured.
A video of the crash went viral on social media, giving rise to allegations that police had used the cars as a "human roadblock" to stop the speeding vehicle. But the police denied this, and said the traffic was slowed down to ensure the safety of civilians.
Tsuen Wan district councillor Roy Tam said the police ought to have done something else to ensure people's safety. "The police should have done better to set up some roadblocks in some other area instead of stopping private cars," he said.
He also called on the government to provide financial help to those injured in the crash.
Tam gave a petition to the Security Secretary John Lee over this when Lee arrived to attend a council function.
