The Secretary for Health Sophia Chan warned on Saturday that insect and rodent activity is expected to increase as temperatures continue to rise.
Speaking at a function to promote clean streets, Chan said the government will step up its rodent and mosquito eradication work, and called on members of the public to play their part.
"Many of the back lanes are very dirty, it is important for all the restaurant owners not to dump rubbish at the back lanes, so that the entire environment will be cleaner," she said.
Hong Kong is in the middle of a record hot spell, with temperatures exceeding 33 degrees for more than a week.
The Observatory says the scorching weather – which it linked to an anti-cyclone – is expected to continue through the weekend.
It's warned people planning to engage in outdoor work or activities to drink plenty of water and avoid overexertion.
