Hong Kong badminton player Angus Ng said on Sunday he hopes people can focus on the performance of athletes rather than what they wear, after he came under attack for the black shirt he put on at the Tokyo Olympics.
Ng, the top men's player from the SAR, was seen with the unconventional attire when he played in the men's singles group match on Saturday, which he won 2-0.
A lot of pro-Beijing netizens, however, were upset that he wore black, which was popular among protesters during the 2019 anti-extradition protests.
"I strongly condemn Ng for not wearing a shirt with the Hong Kong SAR flag... If you don't want to represent Hong Kong, China, please withdraw from the games," Raymond Muk, a vice chair of the pro-Beijing Federation of Education Workers and a member of the DAB, wrote on social media.
But Ng said he's always been proud representing Hong Kong, and he likes the bauhinia a lot.
"My sponsorship ... has ended, and I am currently a free agent, therefore I have to prepare my own clothes for the competition," he wrote on Instagram.
"I choose the clothes that I feel comfortable to wear."
Ng added in a second post that he's not authorised to put an SAR emblem on his clothes, and he hopes to resolve this issue by the next match.
