  • Hong Kong's Covid-19 death toll hits 100

The total death toll linked to Covid-19 in Hong Kong hit 100 on Saturday as health officials recorded another 13 coronavirus cases in the city.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said that four of the new cases were imported cases while five infections have no known source of transmission.

Four of the local cases were from one family, after a 67-year-old male retiree in Yau Tong contracted the virus from an unknown source.

The centre's Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said he fell ill last week and went to the United Christian Hospital on Wednesday. The next day result of a deep throat saliva sample taken there showed he had the coronavirus.

Chuang said they traced his family members and found three of them also had the virus.

Other cases with no known source include a 51-year-old woman who worked for a vehicle examination centre in To Kwa Wan, an 88-year-old female retiree living in Kwai Chung, a 45-year-old clerk working in Lau Fau Shan, and a 30-year-old waitress working in Tuen Mun.

Meanwhile, a chief manager of the Hospital Authority, Dr Lau Ka-hin, said they are putting several patients and a cleaner at Tuen Mun Hospital into quarantine, after a 65-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital on Friday has tested preliminary positive.

Lau said the female patient was assigned to sleep on a temporary bed in the corridor because the hospital was full at the time, and that her bed was located near the haematology ward.

He said the cleaner who was not wearing protective clothing, and several patients sleeping in temporary beds in the corridor will also be treated as close contacts and isolated.

Four employees who had been wearing suitable protective clothing will be subjected to 28 days of medical surveillance.

Meanwhile, the Caritas Medical Centre has confirmed that the a 67-year-old male Covid-19 patient in their care had passed away on Saturday morning, making him the 100th virus-linked death. The hospital said the patient, who had cancer, initially showed signs of recovery after treatment but his condition gradually worsened.
