Earlier in the day the rescue team arrived in Beijing en route to Hong Kong.

The HKSAR search and rescue team that was sent to Turkey to assist at the site of the devastating earthquake returned to Hong Kong late on Friday night and attended a welcome ceremony held by the government at the airport.

The Chief Executive, John Lee, the Director of Health, Dr Ronald Lam and the Deputy Director of Immigration (Control, Visa and Documents), Benson Kwok, welcomed the team at Hong Kong International Airport along with other officials, as well as the Turkish Consul General in Hong Kong attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, the CE said the government was "honoured" to have taken part in the rescue mission, and he praised the Hong Kong team for its efforts.

"The team showed no fear when faced with difficult conditions in the quake-stricken areas and successfully rescued four survivors. They have displayed great professionalism and valiant dedication in the process," Lee said.

"My colleagues of the team, your brave efforts are held in high regard by the people of Türkiye and the Hong Kong SAR, and you should justifiably take pride in your exemplary performance in this search and rescue mission," he added.

Family members of the 59-member rescue team greeted them at the airport, and there were also a number of well-wishers waving Turkish flags.

The powerful tremor last week has claimed more than 41,000 lives in Turkey and Syria.
