The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) said on Tuesday that it is expecting more than 60 million tourists to visit the territory this year – up 3.6 percent from last year.
But because officials expect visitors to continue a trend of spending less and staying for a shorter time, plans are now underway to entice them to prolong their visits.
HKTB’s executive director Anthony Lau said the board will repackage Sham Shui Po so that visitors can experience the area's appeal and culture, following successful campaigns for “Old Town Central”.
He said mainland visitors are the reason the average stay is only 3.1 nights, adding that the length of stay for overseas visitors is more or less unchanged.
