Forecasters at the Observatory say Wednesday was the warmest second day of the Lunar New Year ever.

The mercury climbed to 24.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday afternoon, which was the highest recorded for the second day of the new year since the Observatory started keeping track in 1884.

The Observatory is forecasting light rain patches and mist in the evening, but says this won’t have too much of an effect on visibility for the fireworks display over Victoria Harbour at 8 o’clock.

Senior Scientific Officer Cheng Yuen-chung attributed the warmer weather to a warm and humid maritime airstream that is affecting the coast of Guangdong.

He said this warm weather will persist until the weekend, when the coast will start to be affected by a northeast monsoon, which will make the weather slightly cooler.
