  • June 4 vigil 'not just a ritual' - Lee Cheuk-yan

The organiser of the June Fourth candlelight vigil has rejected suggestions that the annual fixture in Victoria Park to mark the 29th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown has become a ritual.

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China says it’s expecting “massive number” of people to attend - after some 100,000 people joined last year.

Its secretary, Lee Cheuk-yan, says he was saddened to hear some critics say the vigil has become "ritualised".

"There are a lot of emotions inside," Lee said on Sunday.

"Everyone that participates participates with their emotion, with their love of democracy and (their) love of those who sacrificed during the June fourth (massacre)."
