  • Letters from Japan urge killing of Teresa Cheng

A number of legislators said on Wednesday they had received disturbing letters posted from Japan which called for people to kill Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng and two officials involved in the recent Legco by-elections.

DAB lawmaker Elizabeth Quat said the sender had offered a reward for the assassination of Cheng and the two officials, including the returning officer who barred Demosisto's Agnes Chow from standing in the Hong Kong Island poll.

Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Michael Luk, meanwhile, said the letter he received also contained a lot of insulting remarks about China and he believed it could have been posted by Hong Kong independence advocates.

While Quat said Luk would join her in making a complaint to the police about the "shameful" and "dangerous" threats, pro-democracy lawmaker Au Nok-hin said he was not too concerned about the similar letters he and fellow newly elected legislator Gary Fan had received.

Au said such threats are common in politics. "I receive such kind of letters every day", he said.

The lawmakers said the letters were written in a mixture of Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and included photos of the officials named. The writer or writers made reference to the people of Hong Kong having been deprived of their right to vote for the election candidates of their choice.
