  • Michael Tien calls for govt inquiry into MTR farce

The chairman of Legco's Subcommittee on Matters Relating to Railways Michael Tien

The chairman of Legco's railways subcommittee, Michael Tien, has said it is not enough for the MTR to conduct its own investigation into the safety scare at Hung Hom station, saying the government needs to take matters into its own hands.

Local media revealed earlier in the week that steel bars used to secure a platform floor to walls had been cut short to hide the fact they had not been fitted properly.

And the MTR has been criticised for giving several different versions of events, raising suspicions of a cover-up.

Tien called on the administration to set up its own independent inquiry as soon as possible to look at how the railway giant monitors its projects, and whether the current reporting mechanism between the corporation and the government needs to be stepped up.

Several members of the Neo-democrats, meanwhile, made a report to the police regarding the shoddy construction work carried out at Hung Hom station.

One of them, Roy Tam, said the revelations that have been made so far show there could be an element of fraud involved, and he said he believes the police should conduct a thorough investigation.

The group also called on the MTR's chairman, Frederick Ma, to step down.
