  • More sign boards put up on Central-Wan Chai Bypass

Transport authorities have put up more road signs on the newly opened Central-Wan Chai Bypass to help drivers after complaints about a lack of clear directions, and with footage showing some drivers abruptly switching lanes.

The Acting Chief Executive, Matthew Cheung, said he believes the “teething problems” will be solved as drivers become more familiar with the route.

“Things have really been improving. In fact overnight, Transport Department colleagues have been doing their very best to erect directional signboards and also display more information spontaneously on the various screens in the very important so-called vantage points facilitating motorists,” he said.

Traffic on the bypass on the second working day since it opened appeared to be proceeding without problems on Tuesday morning,

Many commuters, including some lawmakers on Monday had complained that the bypass – which is aimed at alleviating congestion in areas like Central, Causeway Bay and Wan Chai – is in effect adding to the traffic there as the Sheung Wan exit of the bypass is yet to open.

Cheung said the government is doing its best to complete work on a link road to the bypass as quickly as possible.
