The Antiquities Advisory Board has proposed listing the Garden Centre in Sham Shui Po as a Grade II historic building, saying it's a landmark and a symbol of people's collective memory. The grading means efforts should be made to preserve the seven-storey structure, that was built in the early 1950s.
The owner, Garden bakery, has applied to have it demolished to make way for a 25-storey commercial building.
The chairman of the advisory board, Andrew Lam, says keeping the building intact is unlikely. But he called for preservation of its iconic clock tower and red logo.
