The Leisure and Cultural Services Department says the fireworks, that were going to be used for Saturday's New Year firework display, have been destroyed for public safety reasons. A spokesman said, since the fireworks had already been unsealed, they couldn't be used in future.
Earlier, the chairman of the Travel Industry Council, Jason Wong, called on the government to consider helping shops and restaurants affected by the cancellation of the display. It was called off by the government out of respect for victims of last week's Tai Po bus crash in which 19 people died and dozens were injured.
It took just under half an hour on Saturday morning to dispose of the five tonnes of fireworks off Tai A Chau.
