Police shot and wounded a man on Thursday after a car chase from the Tolo Highway to outside the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin.
The male motorist was shot in the shoulder while his girlfriend and their two-year-old daughter were also in the vehicle, police said.
Dramatic dashcam footage circulated online showed the view from a taxi at the end of the car chase.
The silver seven-seater was stuck behind a wall of vehicles on Ngan Shing Street, as two officers approached on foot.
But the car bashed into a bus, then backed up repeatedly into the taxi taking the footage, sending debris flying.
One officer waved his pistol at the passenger side window, before breaking it with his baton.
Police later said one shot was fired, striking the driver, 45, in the back right shoulder, before he was arrested and taken to hospital.
The woman, 37, and the couple’s child were not believed to have been injured.
At a media briefing, chief inspector Ng Tak-nam backed the officer’s decision to shoot the man, alleging that the motorist had driven in a crazy manner that had been dangerous to other road users.
Ng said the driver had ignored orders to stop during the chase, which began after officers spotted that the vehicle’s licence had expired in 2015.
The chief inspector claimed it was “legal and justified” for the officer to shoot the man.
"[He had] already caused damage and injuries to at least six or seven road users or cars," Ng alleged.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous and furious driving, as well as not having valid driving and vehicle licences, or third party insurance.
Ng said both the man and the woman were also suspected of “possessing tools that could be used for burglary”.
