A real estate agent was jailed for 15 months on Tuesday for knocking down a woman in his car, severing one of her legs and leaving doctors with no choice but to amputate the foot on the other.
Chan Hiu-sing, 29, had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm over the crash in Kwai Chung in March last year.
He had told the District Court that he had a momentary lapse of attention when his car mounted a pavement and hit To Wing-nam, 37, who was waiting for a minibus with her two-year-old daughter.
The judge, Kwok Wai-kin, said Chan had caused irreversible damage to To's life.
To's career as a florist was abruptly brought to an end and she can no longer live independently. She is in constant pain, the judge noted, and both To and her daughter, who was slightly injured in the accident, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Therefore a deterrent sentence was needed, the judge added.
Chan was also stripped of his driving licence for two years.
