The government on Friday launched a pilot project that will let local tours use Sha Tau Kok Pier, which is located within the frontier closed area and was previously closed to the public.
The pier will be open to local tours during weekends and public holidays.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the launch of the project, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the government hoped to develop the border town of Sha Tau Kok into a major tourist spot.
The CE said the opening of the pier was part of her plan announced in last year’s policy address to develop a Northern Metropolis.
She said those on the tours would be able to take ferries from the pier to outlying islands such as Lai Chi Wo and Kat O for sightseeing.
She added that the government had designated a site next to the pier for Sha Tau Kok residents to sell souvenirs.
The CE said she hoped the project would conserve the culture of Sha Tau Kok while giving it fresh impetus.
The Security Bureau said the pilot project would last for six months, adding that officials would assess its impact on residents and traffic.
