The government's anti-drugs committee has warned young people to be on the alert during the summer period, saying it's the riskiest season for drug-taking.

The chairman of the Action Committee Against Narcotics, Ben Cheung, said while the overall number of drug-takers in Hong Kong has declined, there has been an increase in the use of certain drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.

Cheung warned young people not to go to parties alone, and avoid taking drinks from strangers, pointing out that many people's first taste of drugs comes during the summer holidays.

"It's been a trend that the teenagers... they're combining group activities and entertainment with drugs", Cheung said. He added that using drugs may cause "irreversible damage" and change their lives.
