Eleven people have died and six others are still missing after two dragon boats capsized in Guilin.
The crew were were practising for a race on the Taohua River when the accident occurred on Saturday afternoon.
Fifty-seven people fell into the water and 40 have been rescued.
Authorities in Guilin said villagers in Dunmu had organised a practice session without notifying police, and that two of the organisers have been detained.
Races are held nationwide every year to mark the dragon boat festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, or the summer solstice. (Xinhua)
