Mainland human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng has been arrested by authorities in Jiangsu Province on subversion charges.
He is in custody in the city of Xuzhou.
Earlier this year, Yu was detained while walking his child to school in Beijing, just days after he told international media that his legal licence had been revoked.
Yu also voiced support for the 2014 Occupy movement here in Hong Kong.
Besides openly supporting the Umbrella Movement, Yu has repeatedly criticised the Communist Party over a multi-year sweeping crackdown on rights lawyers and activists, which has seen hundreds detained and dozens arrested.
In October, he was briefly detained after he wrote an open letter urging the party to oust President Xi Jinping, because he had strengthened “totalitarian” rule over the country. Yu also called for political reform to build a “free and democratic China that respects human rights and the rule of law".
