Air China issued an apology on its Weibo page on Friday after a Beijing-bound flight was forced to return to Hong Kong due to suspected smoke in the cabin.

The airline said a strange odour was reported from the cabin of flight CA110 shortly after take-off at 8pm on Thursday. The crew then decided to fly back to Hong Kong airport.

Air China said ground staff later found that the odour was caused by a problem with the air-conditioning system and confirmed that flight safety was not affected.

The flight later resumed its journey and arrived in the capital just before 4:30am.
