Former Taiwanese vice-president Annette Lu announced on Tuesday that she would join the upcoming presidential election, representing the pro-independence party Formosa Alliance.
She said Taiwanese people wanted a “third choice” as they felt sick of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Kuomintang (KMT).
Lu, who quit the DPP last year, told a news conference that she made up her mind to run in the election after months of consideration, saying she would like to change the fate of Taiwan.
“I always tear up whenever I see people in Hong Kong persisting in fighting for their own future. And I feel proud when young people in Hong Kong repeatedly say they admire Taiwan,” she said.
Lu is required to secure support from 280,000 Taiwanese residents before she can officially join the presidential race.
Her announcement came as Taiwan's richest man, Terry Gou, ruled out running as an independent candidate in the January election.
President Tsai Ing-wen of the DPP is seeking a second term, while the KMT's Han Kuo-yu is also challenging her.
