Beijing hits out at US lawmakers over vote

Beijing called for Washington to "stop meddling" on Wednesday after the US House of Representatives passed a bill aiming at defending civil rights in Hong Kong.

"We express our strong indignation and firm opposition to the US House of Representatives' insistence on passing the so-called 'Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act'," said foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang.

In Hong Kong, the Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese foreign ministry warned US lawmakers that playing Hong Kong as a card would get the United States nowhere.

In a statement, it said such actions had again exposed, what it described as, the politicians' gangster logic and hegemonic mindset. (with additional reporting by AFP and Xinhua)
