Mainland officials have accused the United States of seriously infringing China's sovereignty by sailing two warships within 12 nautical miles of disputed coral reefs and the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.

The defence ministry in Beijing said mainland ships and aircraft warned the American ships to leave the area.

The US military vessels carried out manoeuvres in four areas, including near Woody Island - where China appears to have deployed truck-mounted missiles.

The Paracel Islands are occupied by Beijing but are also claimed by Vietnam and Taipei. (AFP)
