China Against US Inviting Taiwan To Virtual Summit

China has denounced a move by the United States to invite Taiwan to a summit on democracy next month.

In Beijing, a spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhu Fenglian, said China is firmly against any official contact between Taiwan and the US.

She called on Washington to abide by the one-China principle and the relevant provisions of the three China-US joint communiques.

The Foreign Ministry also criticised the US move.

"China firmly opposes the US invitation to the Taiwan authorities to participate in the so-called Summit for Democracy," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, adding that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

The Biden administration has invited Taiwan to the summit, according to a list of participants published on Tuesday.

There are 110 participants on the US State Department's invitation list for the virtual event on December 9 and 10.
