  • Chinese youth must be grateful to the party: Xi

President Xi Jinping has called on young Chinese people to ardently love their country, saying they should be grateful to the Communist Party, uphold its leadership, and must follow its instructions and guidance.

Xi was giving a speech to mark the centenary of the May Fourth Movement, when student activists, who viewed the Republic of China as weak, called for radical political changes.

In the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the president said it is the duty of Chinese youth to be patriotic, saying the essence of this is having unified love for the country, the Communist Party and socialism.

"A bright China is not a gift that can be given by anybody," Xinhua News Agency quoted Xi as saying.

"As long as the Chinese people and the nation have the courage to fight and sacrifice themselves for changing their destiny, the country will surely become prosperous and strong and national rejuvenation will be realised," he said.
