Covid-19 On Rise Again In Northeast China

Locally contracted cases of Covid-19 are rising again in northeastern provinces.

The National Health Commission reported 233 local cases of the virus on Wednesday, up from 175 the day before.

Jilin accounted for 94 of the new local infections; 59 were in Shandong; 17 in Shaanxi; 12 in Tianjin; and Hebei and Jiangsu had 11 each. The rest of the cases were reported in nine other provinces and regions, the commission said in its daily report.

There were also 104 imported Covid cases, 15 of them in Shanghai.

The health commission said it had received reports on 399 asymptomatic cases on Tuesday, including 77 from outside the mainland.

That raised the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases reported on the mainland - both local and imported - to 111,857.

The death toll on the mainland since the virus first broke out in Wuhan in late 2019 now stands at 4,636.

The health commission said there were 4,208 patients still under treatment on Tuesday, of whom eight were in severe condition.
