Zhang Yesui speaking through an interpreter
The spokesman for the National People's Congress says the proposed amendment to China's constitution to drop the two-term presidential limit is in line with the Communist Party charter - which places no restriction on how long its leader can serve.
Zhang Yesui said, through an interpreter, that the move will help uphold Xi Jinping's authority, although critics say it is paving the way for him to stay at the helm indefinitely.
"It is conducive to uphold the authority of the central committee of the party with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, and also unified leadership," he said. "It will also be conducive to the state leadership system."
Zhang was speaking at a news conference, a day before the NPC opens its annual plenary session in Beijing. The press conference usually discloses military spending for the next year, but no figures were given this time around.
