  • HK people need to love the country more: Xi

President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said that there’s a need to strengthen Hong Kong and Macau people’s sense of belonging and love for the country.

Speaking at the closing of the National People’s Congress annual plenary session, President Xi also said authorities will promote peaceful development of the cross-straits relationship, and said any separatist attempts are doomed to fail.

Addressing around 3,000 NPC delegates at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said the Communist Party is the leader of everything and will “forever be the backbone of the Chinese people and the nation”.

His comments come just days after the NPC passed an amendment to the Chinese constitution which removed the two-term limit for the president, and affirmed the Communist Party’s status as “the most essential feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics”.

Xi said the party is the leader of everything, and that all other parties, organisations, and people from all sectors should unite around the core of the party.

On China's growing international role, Xi said it "will not pose a threat to any country."

"Only those who are accustomed to threatening others will see everyone as a threat," he said.

He said he is honoured to be re-elected as the president. He pledged to live up to people's confidence and trust in him, work hard under the people’s supervision, and will remain loyal to the country and its citizens.
