Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said on Sunday that Hong Kong's rule of law is gradually collapsing and people's freedoms are no longer guaranteed.

Responding to the massive protest march against extradition law changes, Tsai said the human rights protections, democracy and rule of law that the people of Hong Kong are fighting for are already in place in Taiwan.

But she warned Taiwanese people that they have to cherish and protect these rights.

Tsai again stressed that One Country, Two Systems is not an option for Taiwan.

President Xi Jinping has said that this formula will be the best way for the island to unify with the mainland.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council published a statement in response to Hong Kong's march, urging the SAR government to withdraw its extradition law bill and to stop ignoring the Hong Kong people.

The council reiterated that the Taiwan government will not accept the transfer of fugitives from Hong Kong even if the proposed bill is passed.

It also urged Taiwanese people to be aware of the "deceit" of One Country, Two Systems.

Organisers said more than a million people took part in Sunday's protest march, while police put the figure at 240,000 at its peak.
