Basic Law Committee chairman Li Fei has been reassigned as head of the renamed NPC Constitution and Law Committee.

Officials said the key task for the panel, previously called 'Law Committee', is to step up the implementation of the constitution and will be under the purview of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

His predecessor, Qiao Xiaoyang, said Li is well qualified, and will do a fine job in the new position, just as he did when he headed the Basic Law Committee.

Outgoing local NPC Standing Committee member Rita Fan said given Li's experience in Hong Kong, he will have a good understanding of the situation if the body comes across matters relating to the SAR.

Former justice secretary Elsie Leung, now a deputy chairwoman of the Basic Law Committee, echoed that view, saying Li would be able to do his new job with ease.

She also said she doesn't know who will replace him as head of the Basic Law Committee, but an announcement is expected by June.
