President Xi Jinping has praised Macau for successfully implementing the One Country, Two Systems principle, saying the city has proved that it is "feasible and workable".
Xi said Macau is a successful example of the constitutional principle, with livelihoods improving and society remaining stable and harmonious.
At a meeting with Macau's next Chief Executive, Ho Iat-seng, at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said the framework proves to be feasible, workable and rational.
The president said Macau's previous and current leaders, Edmund Ho and Fernando Chui, managed to unite society and had achieved high economic growth.
Xi told the Chief Executive-designate to stand high and look far, and not to lose sight of the actual situation of Macau and the needs of the country's development.
In response, Ho said he feels honoured to be appointed as the fifth Chief Executive of Macau. He pledged to uphold the One Country, Two Systems principle and unite all Macau residents.
Ho had received his appointment letter from Premier Li Keqiang on Wednesday. He will be sworn in on December 20, which marks the 20th anniversary of Macau's handover from Portugal to China.
