Mainland Sees Drop In New Covid Infections

The number of locally transmitted Covid-19 cases on the mainland continued to drop on Thursday, to 1,226.

That was a decline of more than 30 percent from the 1,860 reported the day before, after a peak in the latest outbreak of 3,507 on Tuesday.

The National Health Commission also reported 1,310 asymptomatic cases, about the same as Wednesday's figure, and 91 imported infections.

The commission said Jilin province remains the hardest-hit, with around 60 percent of the new infections.

But new local infections in Guangdong rose to 83, from 59 the day before -- 71 of them in Shenzhen.

The province also reported 70 asymptomatic cases, 20 of them in Shenzhen.

Guangdong officials said there were 21 imported infections and 15 of these were from Hong Kong.

The mainland has so far recorded 123,773 coronavirus infections and 4,636 Covid deaths since the pandemic began.
