The top mainland official in Macau has been named a national security affairs adviser to the Macau SAR government.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the central government has decided that the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Macau SAR will have a national security affairs adviser and three national security technical advisers.

The liaison office director will assume the post of national security affairs adviser in charge of "supervising, guiding, coordinating, and supporting" Macau in safeguarding national security, Xinhua added.

Fu Ziying is currently the liaison office director.

The three national security technical advisers will also be appointed from within the liaison office.

The Macau government voiced support for the decision, saying it will help protect national security and maintain the SAR's long-term prosperity and stability.

The national security law has been in place in Macau since 2009. (Additional reporting by AFP)
