The US State Department said on Wednesday its support of a "one-China" policy over Taiwan has not changed.

A statement issued by the Biden administration on January 23, its first Saturday in office, expressing strong support for Taiwan in the face of military pressure from Beijing, made no mention of the long-held US policy towards the island.

Asked if the United States still supported the policy, State Department spokesman Ned Price told a regular briefing: “Yes ... our policy has not changed."

Price also said the United States needed a confirmed ambassador to the United Nations if it is to hold China to account, after a vote on President Joe Biden's nominee was delayed.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee's vote on Biden's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has been delayed until Thursday, which could push her confirmation by the full Senate to next week or later. (Reuters)
