US National Security Adviser John Bolton has warned that Beijing's "military provocations" will not win the hearts of the Taiwanese people, as he reiterated that Washington has the island's back.
"Chinese military provocations won’t win any hearts or minds in Taiwan, but they will strengthen the resolve of people everywhere who value democracy," Bolton said on Twitter.
"The Taiwan Relations Act and our commitment are clear," he added, without elaborating on what exactly that commitment is.
Bolton's comments come after Taipei complained that two PLA fighter jets had crossed over the median line in the Taiwan Strait on Sunday morning, forcing it to scramble aircraft of its own.
Taiwan's foreign affairs ministry said it was an "intentional, reckless and provocative action."
Taiwanese media said the last time that mainland jets had crossed the median line was in 2011.
