  • Shanghai, Beijing party bosses among new leaders

China's new-look Politburo Standing Committee unveiled on Sunday has four new faces.

Li Qiang, the second-ranked leader, has been a member of the Politburo and served as Shanghai party secretary since 2017.

Li, 63, previously served as Jiangsu party boss and governor of Zhejiang.

Cai Qi, number five in the hierarchy, has been a Politburo member and Beijing party boss since 2017.

Cai, 66, was also president of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympics. He previously held key posts in Fujian and Zhejiang.

Ding Xuexiang, who's been a member of the Politburo since 2017, has been the head of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee as well as the party general secretary's office, among other posts.

Ding, 60, previously held senior posts in Shanghai.

Li Xi, who has been the Guangdong party boss and a Politburo member since 2017, is now the head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the party's anti-corruption body.

Li, 66, previously worked in his native Gansu and Shaanxi.

Besides President Xi Jinping who's been re-elected as party general secretary, two other current Politburo Standing Committee members, Zhao Leji and Wang Huning, are staying on.

Zhao, 65, the third-ranked leader, previously headed the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, while Wang, 67, a former academic who won praise for being one of the architects of Xi's "Chinese dream" concept, becomes the No. 4 leader.

Outgoing members of the Politburo Standing Committee are Premier Li Keqiang, NPC chairman Li Zhanshu, CPPCC chairman Wang Yang and Vice Premier Han Zheng.
