  • Shanghai conducts new round of citywide Covid tests

Shanghai authorities are conducting another round of citywide Covid-19 testing on Wednesday as new infections hit a new record high.

The city logged 311 local symptomatic cases and 16,766 local asymptomatic cases, including 7,892 from Pudong.

That compares with 268 local symptomatic cases and 13,086 asymptomatic infections the day before.

Officials said since infections remain at high levels, the city’s 26-million population will be put under lockdown again, and residents in different districts will have to undergo PCR or rapid antigen tests, depending on the results of previous mass testing exercises.

Infections in Shanghai took up the bulk of the country’s daily tally of local asymptomatic cases, which had risen to 19,089 from 15,239 cases reported the day before.

The National Health Commission also reported 1,383 new local symptomatic cases nationwide, up from 1,173 logged on Tuesday.

Jilin continues to be hard hit by the outbreak, as it reported 973 local symptomatic infections and 1,798 asymptomatic ones.
