  • Shanghai continues to report surge in Covid cases

Shanghai on Tuesday reported a surge in local asymptomatic cases as the city remains locked down for mass testing.

The city reported 268 local symptomatic cases and 13,086 local asymptomatic cases, including 6,788 from Pudong.

That compares with 425 local symptomatic cases, and 8,581 asymptomatic cases the day before.

With the city being hit by its most serious Covid wave, Shanghai officials announced last week that they were holding separate lockdown and testing operations for the city’s east and west sides for ten days.

While eastern Shanghai, or Pudong, was supposed to reopen last Friday, many areas remain locked down along with Puxi, the western half of the city.

Authorities had said they intend to conclude the testing in Puxi by Tuesday.

Meanwhile across the country, the National Health Commission reported 1,173 new local symptomatic cases and 15,239 local asymptomatic cases.

That compares with 1,366 local symptomatic cases and 11,771 local asymptomatic cases logged on Monday.

Jilin remains one of the hardest hit provinces, reporting more than 2,400 cases, including 792 local symptomatic cases and 1680 asymptomatic cases.

No additional deaths linked to Covid were reported.
