The daily Covid toll in Shanghai continued to increase on Monday, with authorities reporting 50 symptomatic infections and 3,450 asymptomatic cases.
That compares to 47 symptomatic infections and 2,631 asymptomatic cases recorded on Sunday.
The latest cases come as the financial hub announced that it would hold separate lockdown and testing operations in a bid to contain the Omicron wave.
An official from Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, Wu Jinglei, said a new round of universal testing would be conducted in phases in the city to stop the transmission chains.
He called on people to work with the authorities and undergo PCR tests as instructed.
Overall, the mainland reported 1,219 symptomatic local infections – almost 90 per cent of which were from Jilin province.
Authorities also recorded 4,996 asymptomatic cases.
