Shanghai on Tuesday saw a slight drop in new local Covid-19 infections.

The financial hub reported over 23,000 new local cases for the day, among them 994 symptomatic and 22,348 asymptomatic.

That compares with more than 26,000 local infections the day before.

Shanghai’s been under lockdowns since late March, but its infections still take up the bulk of the mainland’s daily tally.

Wu Qianyu, an inspector from the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, said the number of infections in the city remains high despite Tuesday's decline.

She called on residents to stay vigilant and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.

Nationwide, 1,251 local symptomatic infections were reported for the day, a slight rise from 1,164 the day before.

Asymptomatic cases across the mainland fell to 23,295, around 3,000 less than Monday.

Meanwhile, Guangdong Province logged 35 new local cases, all but four of them were from Guangzhou city.

Shenzhen health officials said there were 20 imported asymptomatic cases, 18 of them travelled from Hong Kong.
