Beijing has urged Washington to "follow the spirit" of last week's virtual summit between President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden, and meet it halfway instead of going further down "the wrong path."

The comment from a spokesman at China's US embassy came after Washington put a dozen Chinese firms on its trade blacklist on Wednesday for national security and foreign policy concerns.

The US Commerce Department said some were added to its Entity List for their help in developing the PLA's quantum computing efforts. It also said several entities and individuals from China and Pakistan were put on the list for contributing to Pakistan's nuclear activities or ballistic missile programme.

But the embassy spokesman charged the US with using the catch-all concept of national security and abusing its power "to suppress and restrict Chinese enterprises in all possible means."
